Today's Daily Devotional
The Power of God...
O Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in the time of distress. Isaiah 33:2
In her book, Through Gates of Splendor, Elizabeth Elliot tells how God led her back to minister to the savage people who had killed her husband and his four fellow missionaries in the jungles of Ecuador. She and Rachel Saint (a sister of one of the murdered men) chose to live among those heathen people and learn their language in order to bring the gospel to them. They wrote careful notes and preserved their papers so that they could be used to translate the Bible into the Auca's native tongue.
The work of those five martyred missionaries that had begun in 1956 continued. God's love for their murderers was grasped over time, and those who had killed the young men actually came to know Christ and receive His forgiveness. They went on to become leaders in their jungle community and bore witness to the difference Jesus made in their life. The New Testament translation was a laborious task and through the years many others worked on it. Finally, in 1992 the Auca's received their first copies in their native tongue.
Elizabeth Elliot, Rachel Saint, and all the other brave missionaries served faithfully despite the dangers. Their earnest prayers were answered as the once murderous people came to the Lord. God used even the tragic circumstances to rouse other believers to the call of missions and demonstrate to the watch world the power of the gospel to change cultures and men's hearts away from evil.
Never doubt the power of God. He's still in the business of calling people to Himself and transforming stubborn, hard, sinful hearts to follow Him. Be in prayer for missionaries serving in remote corners of the world where the light of the gospel needs to make inroads. The lost still matter to God, and they should also matter to you.
